Paul Penzone, a retired police officer, is looking to become Maricopa's new sheriff -- a position currently held by Joe Arpaio, the controversial sheriff known for his outspoken nature on undocumented immigration and who has angered many with his hard stance.
Penzone, a Democrat who had worked for 21 years with the Phoenix police, criticized the work done by Republican Arpaio and is gunning for the Latino vote to help him win the election, reports Fox News Latino.
"It's time for a change. I feel that the forces of order represent something extraordinary in our society. The community should have confidence in our police officers and I think that is lacking in the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office," he told Efe.
The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office is the only Arizona law enforcement agency to implement workplace raids seeking undocumented workers, which Penzone called "ridiculous."
"I think the only purpose of these operations is to get the attention of the media. In no way is it fighting crime," he said.
Currently, Arpaio is leading in voter surveys, but Penzone is hopeful that he can overtake the sheriff and help Maricopa County in a different way.
"The sheriff has exploited the issue of undocumented immigration and has used resources that should have been used for public safety," Penzone said.
