Protestors Chain Themselves Outside Arizona Detention Center

“I’m doing this to show my brother and all the other people inside that we support them, and we will do what it takes to get them out,” she said.

On Friday, protestors in nearby Tuscan halted Operation Streamline, a program that convicts illegal immigrants and give them jail time before deporting them, in an attempt to deter immigrants from crossing illegally.

The acts of civil disobedience is part of a collective action to call attention to immigration reform legislation, which has been stalled in the House.

In an op-ed published on Tuesday in The Hill, Kica Matos, director of Immigrant Rights and Racial Justice at the Center for Community Change denounced Sen. Ted Cruz, who called immigrant activists who interrupted his speech “paid political operatives.”

Matos said that most Dreamers and immigration activists fear their parents’ deportations.

“With Congressional Republicans, now seemingly led by Sen. Cruz, dragging their feet on immigration reform, these kids get the daylights scared out of them over and over again,” he said.
