New York City is one of the biggest melting pots in the country, so one wouldn't think that speaking their native language would be such a big deal. That hasn't been the case for several NYPD officers.
We last reported the incident with Officer Jessenia Guzman who was reprimanded for speaking Spanish while on duty, but according to the New York Daily News, Guzman is not the only one. A total of nine Hispanic officers have now been cited for breaking the department's language policy rule.
Anthony Miranda, chairman of the National Latino Officers Association, said that many of the officers were hit with the official reprimands after first filing unrelated discrimination complaints. "They used this policy of English-only to retaliate against those officers that filed complaints,” said Miranda.
