Miss America Crowned: Racist Tweets Run Rampant

The New York resident competed on the platform for "Celebrating Diversity through Cultural Competency." For the talent portion, she performed an Indian dance with Bollywood moves. Other tweets pointed to 9/11 and connected Davuluri with terrorism.

"Miss America right now or miss Al Quaeda?" wrote one. "9/11 was 4 days ago and she gets miss America?" wrote another.

Even media commentators made their stance known. Todd Starnes, host of Fox News & Commentary, tweeted: "The liberal Miss America judges won't say this - but Miss Kansas lost because she actually represented American values. #missamerica".

While his remark was made before Davuluri was crowned, you have to wonder: what qualifies as "American" if we can't even consider a New Yorker one just because of her heritage and the color of her skin?

The same thing can be seen with the Marc Anthony backlash when he was chastised for singing "God Bless America," where many took to Twitter to condemn a "Mexican" and, as they saw it, non-American person singing that song. Nevermind the fact that Marc Anthony is of Puerto Rican heritage, born and raised in New York City.
