Miami Beach Police Chief Raymond Martinez said the 18-year-old was confronted by police at around 5 a.m. as he was doing graffiti on private property.
Hernandez then fled, leading officers on a foot chase. It ended at 71st and Harding where he was cornered by police and then ran toward the officers, ignoring their commands to stop.
“The officers were forced to use the Taser to avoid a physical incident,’’ Martinez said.
According to Miami Herald, Hernandez was hit once in the chest and collapsed. Officers then noticed he was showing signs of distress. The teen was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
“The city of Miami Beach would like to extend their condolences to the family of Israel Hernandez,’’ Martinez said.
Hernandez's death is still under investigation by city and state attorney's office.
