Mexican gymnast Alexa Moreno kicked major ass at the Rio Olympics, but instead of focusing on her talent, body-shamers of the Internet came out to criticize the young competitor’s cuerpo. Luckily, their cruel remarks were quickly overshadowed by words of encouragement from more supportive Twitter users.
Moreno, 22, competed in the uneven bars, floor exercise, beam and vault discipline at the artistic gymnastics qualifications, coming in at 31st.
Instead of being applauded for an amazing accomplishment in an area where mexicanas are underrepresented, Twitter users diminished her skill, saying she was only there to "fulfill the quota," and bashed her body, with one comparing her to an animated image of a pig and another saying she’s the size of two gymnasts.
Those tweets, many of them later deleted, were soon drowned by more positive ones.
Felicidades a #AlexaMoreno por su gran participación en las olimpiadas!Una razón más de sentirnos orgullosos a pesar de todas las críticas

I'd love to see anyone body-shaming Alexa Moreno do that badass floor routine she pulled off. She's a tremendous athlete and cute as can be.

As for Moreno, well, she’s always been inspiring. "Gymnastics is a sport that requires you to have it all: flexibility, coordination, strength, velocity," she said in an interview with Americas Now on CCTV last month. "Gymnastics is a sport for brave people. You need to be dedicated, have a strong will, and lots of persistency. I won’t stop until I have reached my goals."
We’re hoping the badass mexicana keeps this attitude, because we want to see her again.
