In 2011, a businessman by the name of Carlos Gutiérrez fell victim to a vicious attack by drug cartels in the Mexican state of Chihuahua.
For months Gutiérrez, who lived in the northern state with his wife and two children, was being extorted by the Juárez cartel for up to $10,000 a month. He made the payments continuously, but eventually could not keep up with the high demands of the cartel members.
And once he failed to make payments, the cartel decided to teach him a lesson by cutting off his legs, reports Fox News Latino.
Following the events, Gutiérrez sought asylum in the U.S. “They made an example of Carlos by chopping off his legs,” Carlos Spector, a Texas lawyer who helped get Gutiérrez into the U.S. and founder of pro-asylum group Mexicanos En Exilio, told Fox News Latino.
