On Wednesday, lawmakers urged Congress to pass a bill that would that would allow the creation of a national Latino American history museum.

According to The Washington Post, a presidential commission called for the creation of a Smithsonian American Latino Museum two years ago, but efforts were stalled in Congress last year.

A group called Friends of the American Latino Museum have started raising money for an advocacy effort they hope will push Congress to authorize the creation of the Smithsonian museum.

“We’re looking for a home for our history, for our culture, for our contributions to this country,” said California Rep. Xavier Becerra, who serves on the Smithsonian’s governing board.
