According to the Fairfax County Police Department, the crime was a “road rage incident.” The New York Times reports that Hassanen and a group of friends had enjoyed a bite at McDonald's and were returning to a late-night event at the All Dulles Area Muslim Society, when, at 3:40 a.m., they came across driver Martinez Torres.

As many as 15 teens were walking or riding their bicycles when they ran into Torres. An argument allegedly erupted between a boy on a bike and the driver, and Martinez Torres ended up driving his vehicle into a curb out of anger. He then stepped out of his car flinging a bat while chasing the teens.

“Torres was able to catch Nabra,” the police said in a statement posted online. “His anger over the encounter led to violence when he hit Nabra with a baseball bat.”

After attacking the young woman, Martinez Torres drove Hassanen's body to a nearby man-made pond in Loudoun County. According to autopsy results, she sustained blunt force trauma to the upper body.

Torres was arrested at 5:15 a.m. on Sunday morning, after a police officer saw him pacing back and forth near the scene and stopped him for a vehicle violation and later detained him for questioning after discovering the body.

He is currently in jail without bond.

While the killing has been deemed an act of “road rage," officials are still investigating and say hate crime charges could be filed. “I wouldn’t rule it out until I see all of the evidence,” Raymond F. Morrogh, the commonwealth’s attorney for Fairfax County who is prosecuting the case, said.
