Legislators Vow to Protect Children Being Targeted by Sex Traffickers

The screening process to identify victims of the trafficking of children is currently performed by the Customs and Border Protection personnel and they are not professionally trained in child welfare.

“Border Patrol was ill-prepared and didn’t have the training to care for these children,” Congresswoman Royal-Allard told NBC Latino. “Because of that, the children weren’t being treated properly.” She also went on to say her goal is to include the same language for a bill to be introduced to the House of Representatives.

As many as 17,500 people brought into the U.S. each year are victims of human trafficking, according to a 2013 Congressional Research Service report.
