Mexican Actress Katy Jurado is Honored in Today's Google Doodle

 

 

Today’s Google Doodle honors the birthday of Katy Jurado, the first Latin American actress nominated for an Academy Award.

The Mexican-American actress was born María Cristina Estela Marcela Jurado García in Guadalajara, Mexico. She is the first Latin-American actress to be nominated for an Academy Award for her work in Broken Lance and she is best known for her Golden Globe-winning role in High Noon. A star of Mexico's Golden Age, she has paved the way for Mexican actresses today 

Today would have marked her 94th birthday and to celebrate the legacy of Jurado Google's doodle features her in front of a backdrop inspired by High Noon, along with several roses in honor of her native city of Guadalajara.

In the Google description it states, "While she was stunningly beautiful, her portrayals transcended the stereotyped, over-sexualized roles written for Mexican women at the time. Her talent at depicting a range of characters helped to expand the parts available to Mexican and other Latinx actresses in Hollywood today."
