It's official: Julian Castro is the new secretary of Housing and Urban Development!

The Huffington Post reports the San Antonio Mayor was confirmed on Wednesday, after a 71-26 vote. The 26 votes against Castro all came from Republicans, including Texas senator, Ted Cruz. Castro's new appointment now makes the 39-year-old Mexican-American one of the government's highest-ranking Hispanics.

”I know that together with the dedicated professionals at HUD, Julian will help build on the progress we’ve made battling back from the Great Recession — rebuilding our housing market, reducing homelessness among veterans, and connecting neighborhoods with good schools and good jobs that help our citizens succeed,” Obama said in a written statement following the vote, according to Politico.

"Julian has lived the American dream in his own life, and I'm confident he will help Americans across our country seize their own piece of that dream for themselves and their children."

The San Antonio Mayor, whose mother was a Latino rights activist, is considered a potential vice presidential pick for 2016. He will replace Shaun Donovan as housing secretary.
