The Huffington Post reports that Judge Shira Scheindlin's decision called for federal monitoring to to ensure police are in compliance with the constitution. Bloomberg defended stop-and-frisk citing that the tactic made city street's safer and rid it of thousands of illegal guns.
According to the Associated Press, the U.S. District Court judge said she was not putting an end to the policy, but rather reforming it.
"The city's highest officials have turned a blind eye to the evidence that officers are conducting stops in a racially discriminatory manner," U.S. District Judge Shira Scheindlin wrote in her ruling.
"In their zeal to defend a policy that they believe to be effective, they have willfully ignored overwhelming proof that the policy of targeting 'the right people' is racially discriminatory."
