According to the UK Daily Mail, Morales' mother Auliea Hanlon stormed out of the courtroom following the ruling. "She wasn't even old enough to get a driver's license," said Hanlon. "But Judge Baugh, who never met our daughter, justified the paltry sentence saying she was older than her chronological age."

Hanlon continued, "I guess somehow it makes a rape more acceptable if you blame the victim, even if she was only 14."

In 2010, only weeks before her 17th birthday, Morales committed suicide. Her mother said the rape was "a major factor" in her suicide.

On Wednesday, the judge issued an apology. "I don't know what I was thinking or trying to say. It was just stupid and wrong," he told the Billings Gazette.

The MoveOn.org petition, which is currently set in place to force Baugh to resign following his ruling, currently has 37,686 signatures.
