The news is official: Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez has passed away after battling cancer since July 2011. During his almost 14 years as Venezuela’s president and the founder of the Revolutionary Bolivian Movement, Hugo Chávez became one of the most controversial figures in international politics. He had many outrageous moments during his reign from 1999 until he officially stepped down in December 2012, naming vice president Nicolás Maduro as his successor in the case that he wasn’t able to come back to his new six-year term, which began in January 2013.

After his long career in politics, how do you view his legacy? Will he be remembered as a President who tried to make changes for the better or for the worst? Share your thoughts on the controversial figure in the comments below.
