Gay Latina Teens Shot in Texas - One Killed, The Other in Hospital

Two teens were shot in a park in Portland, Texas on June 23, one of them fatally. Mollie Judith Olgin, 19, and Mary Kristene Chapa, 18, were found in knee-deep grass in a nature area park in Portland by a couple that Saturday morning, reported Corpus Christi Caller Times. Olgin, whose father is Hispanic, was found dead. Chapa, who is Mexican-American, was rushed to a hospital where she remains in severely injured, but stable condition.

"It’s something that I think all of us are going to carry with us for a while,” Frank Reyna, a friend of both girls, told “It’s going to take a while to get past this, the idea that there is somebody still out there that did this to these two amazing, beautiful people, and that they’re walking free right now.”

No suspect has been identified. A bullet casing from a large-caliber gun was found at the scene, but they have not found a weapon. Two witnesses reported hearing what they thought to be firecrackers late that Friday night, but did not report it.

Motive has not been established, though the teens were in a same-sex relationship. The pair had been together since February. Chapa hasn't been able to communicate what happened to heer that night, though her brother, Hilario Chapa, reports that her condition is improving to

“Krissy’s health — considering what happened to her — she’s doing amazing,” says Hilario Chapa, 32. “She’s making a strong recovery. The doctors are amazed.”

Vigils have been held for the two, and a WePay donation page has raised more than $25,000 for medical bills, as Chapa was uninsured.
