13-Year-Old Gives Birth To Triplets In Dominican Republic

A 13-year-old gave birth to triplets in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on Tuesday. The hospital says that the mother and her newborns are out of danger. The three boys weighed in at 4.2, 3.1, and 3.7 pounds at birth, and are the product of a sexual relationship the teenage mother had with a 61-year-old man. The father is now on the run from authorities, who are looking to charge him with sexually abusing a child.

According to The Daily Mail, the young mother told local media that she is “happy” with her three sons, whom she has named Samuel, Joshua, and Jovanny. All three children are in the intensive care ward of a local hospital. Although they were born prematurely, all are expected to survive. They could be released sometime this week.

The mother was admitted to the hospital in September “with serious health and malnutrition problems”, and since then has undergone “a comprehensive program of preparation for the delivery.”

Although the age of consent is 18 in the Dominican Republic, the country has the fifth highest teen pregnancy rates in Latin America, exceeded only by Ecuador, Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Honduras.
