This is horrifying: Chilean police rescued a malnourished two-year-old boy after they discovered him being breastfed by a neighbor's pregnant dog.
A witness spotted the dog, named Reina, feeding the boy on Thursday at a mechanic's workshop in the desert port of Arica, about 1,000 miles north of Santiago.
According to the Independent, police took the child to the hospital, where doctors discovered he suffered from a skin infection and lice infestation. Child welfare authorities have taken charge of the boy's well-being since his release from the hospital on Friday.
Captain Diego Gajardo told AP that the mother arrived at the hospital drunk, but authorities did not apprehend her since the boy had not come to physical harm.
The director of Chile's National Service For Minors Marcela Labraña called the incident "reprehensible and inhumane," local media reports. A family court hearing will take place on September 22 to decide who will care for the child moving forward.
