Jose Baez, the defense attorney in the infamous Casey Anthony case, gives himself credit for Tuesday’s not guilty verdict. The 42-year-old Puerto Rican lawyer shared his sentiments several minutes after his client, Casey Anthony, was found not guilty of murdering her 2-year-old daughter Caylee. Baez, who is a Navy veteran, said “there are no winners” in the case and added that he had mixed feelings over the entire situation.
After a media-frenzied trial and 11 hours of deliberation, Anthony was acquitted by a jury of murder and child abuse charges this week and convicted only of lying to police. She will be sentenced tomorrow. Anthony’s daughter was found dead near her family’s Florida home almost three years ago.
Baez said the not guilty verdict should serve as a wake-up call for those in support of the death penalty, which would have been Anthony’s fate if she had been convicted of first-degree murder. The defense attorney said he is ecstatic for his client and wants her “to be able to grieve and grow and somehow get her life back together.”
“The best feeling I have today [is] I know when I go home and my daughter will ask me what did you do today? And I can say I saved a life,” he said.
