California Legislature Passes Bill Allowing Undocumented Immigrants To Practice Law

A new bill has reached the desk of California Gov. Jerry Brown, and it could make it easier to many undocumented immigrants to achieve the American Dream.

According to the Huffington Post, Assembly Bill 1024 allows undocumented immigrants to obtain California law licenses. The bill passed the state Legislature last week, and now needs the governor’s signature to be passed into law.

The bill would be a huge victory for Sergio Garcia, an immigrant who worked his way through law school and passed the bar exam on the first attempt. Unfortunately, because of his undocumented status, he was not allowed to receive his legal license, due to a 1996 federal law banning him from receiving federal benefits.
