A large sign outside of a Burger King is causing outrage in the town of Ephrate, Washington. The billboard reads: “Now Hiring Must Be Mexican.”
The image was posted on KFFM 1073’s website, a radio station based in Yakima, Washington, alongside a poll which asked: “What do you think? Do you find this sign offensive or are you okay with their honesty?”
A staggering 82 percent of the respondents said that they found the sign offensive.
Burger King responded to the allegations of racism in a Facebook comment: "Hi Noel, we are aware of this image. The sign in question was posted briefly last summer, without approval, at a franchisee-owned and operated restaurant. Please know the franchisee has informed us that the employee who posted and photographed this sign was immediately terminated as a result. The Burger King team is dedicated to diversity and inclusion."
UPDATE: Burger King reached out to Latina with the following statement: "Burger King Corp. (BKC) is aware of this Facebook post. The signage in question took place at a franchisee owned and operated restaurant. The signage was unauthorized and posted briefly and photographed last summer by a former restaurant employee. We have been informed by the franchisee that immediate actions were taken to terminate the employee responsible. BKC has a long history of dedication to diversity and inclusion. Diversity is a driving force behind both our innovation and an inclusive environment for our people -- employees, franchisees, suppliers and restaurant guests alike. In addition, the franchisee that owns and operates this BURGER KING® restaurant has a zero-tolerance policy for discrimination of any kind."
