Ariel Castro Found Dead

Ariel Castro, the Cleveland man who held three women captive for over a decade, was found dead on Tuesday night after apparently committing suicide.

According to The New York Times, officials say Castro was found hanging in his cell at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, Ohio, at 9:20 p.m.

The 53-year-old had been housed in a cell by himself and a guard was required to check on him every 30 minutes at staggered intervals, read a statement provided by JoEllen Smith, a spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction.

It is not clear how Castro was able to hang himself, but the Ohio Corrections Department said a review of the incident is currently under way.

Castro accepted a plea deal in July in order to avoid the death penalty and was sentenced to life without parole, plus 1,000 years last month.
