Former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was indicted on first-degree murder by a Massachusettes grand jury on Thursday, according to USA Today.
The 23-year-old also faces five weapons and ammunition charges. USA Today reports that if Hernandez is convicted, he will face a possible life in prison sentence without parole.
Hernandez was expected to appear in court at 2 p.m. EST on Thursday for a probable cause hearing, but instead, the district attorney is expected to announce the indictment at that time.
The former NFL star had been charged with the murder of 27-year-old semipro football player and friend Odin Lloyd, and had been held without bail since June 26.
