The community in Asbury Park is hurting after the shocking news that a 10-year-old boy and his mother were shot inside their Asbury Park home on Wednesday night.
Shortly after 10:30 p.m., Yovanni Banos-Merino, and his mother Lilia Merino, were found shot inside their home by police investigating reports of gunfire, NJ authorities state. The boy was pronounced dead at Jersey Shore University Medical Center while his mother was treated at a hospital and released.
Within 24 hours, investigators arrested and charged Jah-Del Birch, a 16-year-old Neptune High School student, who has since been arrested in connection with the shooting. Authorities investigated the involvement of someone else with the fatal shooting.
On Friday, 18-year-old Karon Council was arrested in Broward County, Florida. The 18-year-old was charged with multiple offenses, including murder for the NJ shooting.
According to NYPost, the child was not the target of the shooting. Council had a dispute with a man and "took it out on" the man's girlfriend's family. Assistant U.S. Marshal Manny Puri said in a statement to the Asbury Park Press, “Council was a very dangerous fugitive with no sense of value for life and could of easily continued his violent behavior in South Florida,”
A Go Fund Me page has been set up for the child's funeral expenses and to have him transported back to Mexico.
