Gay couples celebrate after getting married at City Hall in Mexico City, Thursday, March 11, 2010. The couples wed under Latin America's first law that explicitly approves gay marriage.

Same-sex marriage was legalized in the capital city of Mexico earlier this month and just last week the country witnessed the historic marriage of five gay couples. "Today is a historic day," Civil Registry Judge Hegel Cortes said at the ceremony, which took place on March 11, 2010 at the old city hall building in Mexico city, "It solidifies the evolution of one of the most important rights."

The law that allows same-sex couples to marry also extends the right to adopt, but not everyone supports the unions. Famed feminist singer Paquita la del Barrio spoke out against adoption for gay couples, saying, "I'd rather see a kid die."

She made the explosive statement on Escandalo TV when a reporter asked her, "You'd rather see a child in the street, dying of hunger, lonely, or that two human beings provide love, give him food and a roof over his head?" To which del Barrio tells the shocked reporter, "It's better that the child dies than be in that lifestyle."
