Vatican Excommunicates Mother and Doctors of 9-Year-old Rape Victim

We were all pretty shocked to hear the story about the 9-year-old Brazilian girl, who, after years of being raped by her stepfather, wound up pregnant with his twins. Adding insult to injury, the Catholic Church has decided to excommunicate the little girl's mother and the doctors who performed the abortion, "God’s law is above any human law," said regional archbishop, José Cardoso Sobrinho.

Although abortion is illegal in Brazil, exceptions can be made if the pregnancy poses a grave threat to the mother's or baby's life. Since the girl is only 9-years-old and weighs a mere 80 pounds, doctors felt that she would be unable to carry the baby to full term safely. One of the doctors involved, Rivaldo Albuquerque, told a Brazilian TV station that he intended to keep going to Mass, regardless of the archbishop’s order.

The Vatican defended the regional archbishop's decision saying, "It is a sad case but the real problem is that the twins conceived were two innocent persons, who had the right to live and could not be eliminated."

The stepfather who sexually abused the little girl for over 4 years has not been excommunicated. The church has stated that the sexual acts he forced upon the little girl and her mentally disabled older sister are not as bad as ending the life of an unborn child. "It is clear that he committed a very serious sin, but worse than this is the abortion," Sobrinho declared.

To Frantastic: What? Read the Bible? The Bible is man written, although some believe it was inspired by God. Nevertheless, for people who think the Bible should be literally followed then, they should be dead and not posting on this board. In the Bible, you are to not to eat pork, use certain materials for clothing, whore out your daughters, and so many other ridiculous things that were written for the rigid patriarchal society of that era. Lest we forget the Inquisition...the POINT of this article is the Excumminication of the physicans and the mother. Did the Catholic Church say anywhere in their statement that the father should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law? NO! they left that part out. Ugh, this issue grats on my nerves! Right now, the Catholic Church is busy condemming Dan Brown's novel, Angels and Demons, which is a quick and wonderful read. By the way, the priest they speak of in Dan Brown's book, who self inflicts pain, is now, one of the bishops in the Catholic Church at San Fernando, in San Antonio, Texas. Thanks for letting me have my say, TD :)
Read the Bible, the ultimate sin is denying Jesus! Other than that sin is sin. I can't even begin to comment about the rest of it.
I was brought up Catholic, but I don't agree with anything they do, really. The Church has a long history of acting like a mafia...religion is the root of all evil in this world and all major wars!!! Spirituality is the answer. And the cool thing is you can take things you like from different religions and believe in something that works for you. Nothing against atheist people, either, I just think it's too easy to not believe in anything. Even believing in science is better than believing in nothing, in my opinion. And it must get hard when life gets tough, not to be able to have faith in something...then again, that's the beauty of being human. free will, baby. to quote TD, thanks for letting me have my say :)
It has been confirmed to me today that the Catholic Church supports and protects child molesters around the world. It is extremely depressing.
THIS IS JUST DISGUSTING! The Catholic Church is absurd!
Excommunicate???? Really, I can find a few other worthy things to do to the lowlife stepfather outside of pulling him from a religion that (exactly) can't make up it's mind as to what is right and what is wrong. I am a Roman Catholic member (and sometimes very ashamed to admit). I don't believe in abortions. However, I also strongly don't believe in the abuse of an existing child in which this should be a productive member of our existing society some day. The church should concern itself with hunger and poverty and the internal house cleansing rather than worry about throwing out members that obviously need more guidance and support due to the consequences of the actions of others.
How ridiculous is that? That sick pervert should be excommunicated, and prosecuted for child molestation she's and her sister are the victims here any grown man who takes advantage of the inocence of two little girls shouldn't have any consideration at all. She is just a little girl how could they have expected her to risk her life to carry to term on a 80 lb body the decision wouldn't have to have been made had that pervert not molested her. This church is out of touch with reality and has the wrong set of priorities.
Oh! Are we shocked? The Catholic Church has been excummuincating church members for years, for Stupid reasons. Can anyone keep up with all their changes? Curious, how the Catholic Church can retaliate to such a necessary action, when they cover -up all of thier PEDAPHILE PRIESTS! Three new Pedaphile priests were uncovered recently. They were working in San Antonio, Texas and rotated amony 9 different churches. How did the Catholic Church advise parishioners? They posted the story in their church bulliten but never went to the media to announce the outcry of a child who was molested by 3 different priests for over a period of 4 years! The catholic church needs to shut-up and take care of cleaning their own house! A former Roman Catholic!
