This is one of those stories that’s so gut wrenching and horrifying that it’s difficult to report. California police say a 15-year-old high school student was gang raped Friday outside of her Homecoming dance by at least four teens, according to CNN. She was flown from the scene of the brutal attack in critical condition. By Monday, the girl was stable. Two suspects have been arrested in the case, and another is being questioned. One of the suspects, Manuel Ortega, 19, was arrested soon after he fled the scene and will face charges of rape, robbery and kidnapping, police said.
Here is what we know so far: while the school dance was taking place, the victim found herself outside with at least one of the suspects. Word started to spread that a rape was taking place, and more and more people went outside to watch what was happening.
"As people announced over time that this was going on, more people came to see, and some actually participated," said Lt. Mark Gagan of the police department in Richmond, California.
As many as 15 males ended up standing around while a young girl was being brutally raped, and none of them called police or offered to help the victim.
The victim was found unconscious and "brutally assaulted" under a bench shortly before midnight Saturday, after police received a call from someone in the area who had overheard people at the assault scene "reminiscing about the incident," Gagan said.
"This just gets worse and worse the more you dig into it," Gagan continued. "It was like a horror movie after looking at the evidence. I can't believe not one person felt compelled to help her."
