Salma Hayek Tours First Green Home Built in New Orleans

Salma Hayek was in New Orleans recently to visit the first green home built in the Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans as part of the Global Green project. Global Green USA is the American branch of the international Green Cross organization originally founded by Mikhail Gorbachev to "foster a shift of global values towards a sustainable and secure future."

Global Green has been on the forefront of the rebuilding of green structures in the aftermath of the destruction wrought by Hurricane Katrina. Hayek recently toured the first completed home and was deeply moved by what she saw.

“This house was built with so much love and it was the dream of a collective group of people who are trying to change things in the world. I think that what has happened here has been a wake up call. The courage and dignity from the people who have faced this tragedy has been something that will motivate all of us,” said Hayek.

The first home that has been completed will serve as a visitor center while the rest of the project, including five more houses, an apartment complex and a Sustainable Design and Climate Action Institute are completed. Hayek has been a long-time supporter of Global Green, traveling to Antarctica in 2005 to highlight the effects of global warming on the environment and local Inuit population.

Mariela Rosario,

I'm a raging opinionista and I love to share my ramblings on everything from pop culture to food to stuff that makes me laugh & cry! I've worked in all types of media (TV, film, print) and was previously the online editor at Latina magazine before joining Mamás Latinas. On most nights you can find me working my way through my library of cookbooks or playing with my puppy Lola (my only child so far). I have a wonderful hubby who shares my passion for any and all kinds of travel. Together, we've formed a semi-professional wine drinking team.
