Republicans Urge Latinos Not to Vote in Nevada
| 10/20/2010 - 16:45 |
As if a recent Pew Hispanic Center report stating that half of Latino registered voters plan not to vote on November 2 weren’t shocking enough, now a Republican group calling itself Latinos for Reform, headed by Robert de Posada, is actually encouraging a poll boycott in online and TV ads.
Univision yanked the group’s ad, which was aimed at Nevada Latinos, after Democrats denounced it as a low blow against Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who is in a fierce battle against Republican tea party favorite Sharron Angle for his seat.
In Spanish, a male voice told voters “Don’t vote this November. This is the only way to send them a clear message: You can no longer take us for granted.”
Even Angle, (who is by no means enlightened when it comes to Latinos—she recently told a group of Hispanic high school students, "Some of you look a little more Asian to me") has distanced herself from the ad. President Obama called it a “cynical political ploy,” but De Posada stands by it, saying that Democrats have done nothing in two years to address immigration reform.
