Paraguayan Soccer Player Salvador Cabañas Shot in the Head in a Mexico City Bar

International soccer star Salvador Cabañas is in critical condition after being shot in the head following an attack inside the bathroom of a bar in Mexico City, BBC News reports. The athlete, who plays for the Mexican Club America, was expected to play for Paraguay at this year's World Cup in South Africa where they are grouped with Italy, New Zealand and Slovakia.

Cabañas, 29, is being cared for at a local hospital. He was conscious when he arrived at the facility, where he was being operated on to remove the bullet, team president Michel Bauer told Televisa network. Officials say two men have been arrested for the shooting, although a motive for the attack wasn’t clear.

Juan Angel Napout, president of Paraguay's soccer federation, said a doctor would travel to Mexico to be with Cabañas. "We are praying for him," Napout said.
