Obama Signs $600 Million Border Security Bill

President Barack Obama signed a $600 million border security bill into law last week in hopes of moving the immigration reform debate forward. For years, conservatives and Republicans have argued that a discussion about reforming the current immigration system is not valid until more has been done to reinforce and protect our borders. The border security bill aims to do just that.

The new bill will send an additional 1,000 troops to the U.S./Mexico border, as well as provide unmanned surveillance drones to fly over the area. "This legislation will build upon our successful efforts to protect communities along the Southwest border and across the country," the White House said in a statement.

The bill was passed with substantial bipartisan political support and Obama's administration is betting that it will translate into a more open discussion on next steps for the immigration reform process in Congress.
