On Tuesday, infamous drug lord Teodoro “El Teo” García Simental was captured by Mexican authorities. He was one of Mexico’s and the U.S. government’s most wanted men and a $2.1 million reward was offered for tips leading to his arrest. After five months of intelligence work, Mexico’s Federal Police located García Simental near the Las Flores neighborhood in La Paz, Baja California Sur.
“El Teo” began as an enforcer in the Arellano Felix cartel and after breaking off from the organization in April 2008 to traffic drugs in Baja California, he was known for kidnapping businessmen, doctors and politicians. He was also responsible for dissolving more than 300 bodies in acid and leaving tortured and disintegrated remains on busy streets and hanging from overpasses with messages to his rivals.
This is the second big victory for the Mexican government in the past month. Another drug lord, Arturo Beltran Leyva, died in a shootout in December.
