Doctors in Callao, Peru amputated the wrong foot of an 86-year-old man and then had to cut the right one off too. Jorge Villanueva had been fighting off an ulcer on his right foot since Jan. 4 and had to go into surgery when it worsened on Saturday, The Huffington Post reports. When his daughter, Carmen Villanueva, discovered the botched operation, doctors performed the second amputation the following day.
"It was a terrible shock when I lifted up the sheets and saw they had amputated his left foot," Carmen told RPP radio.
The Sabogal Hospital has suspended the doctors involved while it conducts an investigation and the family plans to sue. Health Minister Oscar Ugarte said of the amputation, "Without a doubt this should be punishable. ... It is a sad situation, and we have asked for an investigation."
