The Chile Earthquake: How You Can Help

The 8.8 magnitude earthquake that ripped through Chile on Saturday, Feb. 27 was a stark reminder that no matter how prepared we are, natural forces still have the power to trump human ingenuity. Since Saturday, images have been flooding in, demonstrating that although the death tolls have not reached anything close to the loss of human life experienced in Haiti, the devastation is undeniable. As the Chilean government assesses the damage and opens its border to international aid, we wanted to give you a glimpse into the day-to-day reality that Chilenos are facing.

You can help by donating to the charities below:

Send a text reading “CHILE” to 25383 to donate $10 to Habitat for Humanity, or text “YOUTH” to 20222 to donate $10 to UNICEF.

Contribute to The Red Cross International Response Fund, which has already pledged 50,000 to help the effort. Your donations can help them to send more aid to the area.

Donate to the United Way, which has promised to  provide long-term relief in the region. You can also text CHILE to 864833 to pledge $10 to the United Way.

You can also donate to Direct Relief International to help provide medical aid in the region, something which the Chilean government has specifically asked for assistance with. To give to the Chilean relief effort, visit Direct Relief International and type "Chile" in the Designation field to indicate where you'd like your donation to be used.

Mariela Rosario,

I'm a raging opinionista and I love to share my ramblings on everything from pop culture to food to stuff that makes me laugh & cry! I've worked in all types of media (TV, film, print) and was previously the online editor at Latina magazine before joining Mamás Latinas. On most nights you can find me working my way through my library of cookbooks or playing with my puppy Lola (my only child so far). I have a wonderful hubby who shares my passion for any and all kinds of travel. Together, we've formed a semi-professional wine drinking team.
