Double Dare: Stuntwoman Crystal Santos Shares the Tricks of the Trade

Name: Crystal Santos
Age: 32
Roots: Mexican Profession: Stunt Woman
Salary Range: Average: 37,000; Top: 100,000+

How has being Latina affected your career?

I’ve done stunts for Rosario Dawson and Roselyn Sanchez. And being Mexican makes me a commodity, so I’ve been able to act in a couple of films, too, while the typical stunt person only doubles.

Any traits all stunt women share?

We are all tomboys, there are no real girly-girls, but we do clean up nice, don't get me wrong! The stunts community is very small. We hike together, go surfing and rock climbing. These are people who have been athletes and adrenaline junkies their entire lives, but we are safe about our jobs.

What do you wish you knew before you get started?

It pays to sit back and just watch and listen. Most people are interested in showing off what they can do. Your stunt coordinator who has been doing this for 30 years knows how it will go and has a vision. You just need to sit back, listen, take instruction and do your job.

Any pointers for Latinas who want to get started in this business?

I would recommend taking gymnastics when you're younger or concentrating on a particular sport you really like. Some kind of fighting is always good to know. You have to be overall athletic and definitely have a resilience to pain. The best way to really get serious about this industry is to find someone to mentor you so you can have a reference, someone you were trained by. No one wants to be your first job because it's such a dangerous business.

What an interesting story. I did not know that there was a Latina stunt double in Hollywood. Crystal Santos is a great example of the many talents and abilities of Latina women. Unfortunately we never hear about these women. I wish the article were more in depth. This interview left me wanting to know more about this daredevil woman!
What an incredible young woman! It's awesome to see a woman achieve such great status in a predominantly male industry! This gal is a great role model for all young women, and I think it would be great to see her on a future cover!
This would have made a great cover story! People can relate to individuals who are "behind the scenes". In addition, this would empower all the latinas who walk the fence. Okay we now know that latins have made it in hollywood, but those are far and few between reality. They are many careers that latinas are capable of in the industry, why not expose those careers! If you had this photo on the cover I'm sure more latinas would of picked up the magazine out of curiousity! "Who's that chica on fire"! And, not to mention, good looking!
What a good change in reading about the person behind the scenes.. Who cares of someone is wearing and who is dating who, but to actually have someone who can be a role model and exposing them to young girls, is refreshing! Keep up the good work!
hey sis, love the article. i really think this would be great as a cover story it is so different from the normal cover stories.good job.
It is nice to read about someone making their way up. Good info for anyone who has ever considered being a stunt woman and nice to hear about those doing all the work behind the scenes!
We should see more articles like this be a cover story!!! This sounds like an exciting career why not elaborate? We always see the big headliners with the same faces, why not change it up a bit?
