Latino & Engaged: Hot Couple of the Week!

Here at Latina, we love hearing stories of love. We’re talking about heartbeat-jolting, weak-in-the-knees kind of love! The kind that makes you want to shout your feelings out to the entire world, and even spill to your mami.

Which is why we’re launching a new column called Latino & Engaged: Hot Couple of the Week

Every Friday, we will be picking one couple whose love for one another rubs off on even innocent bystanders, and we'll be asking them what they've been asked countless times: how they met, how they fell for one another... you know, the must-have deets! And while they tell us, we remain doe-eyed, soaking it all in.

We’re kicking off our column with 27-year-old Michael Lamela and 25-year-old Victoria Reznik, an adorable couple from New Jersey who met back in 2006. They got engaged on Aug. 19, 2012! Michael is of Spanish descent, and Victoria has a mixed Spanish, Filipino, Asian and Caucasian background.

Below is their story:

How did you two meet?

Victoria: We actually met back in 2006. I was living at Rutgers in an apartment with four other girls and one of the girls that I lived with was friends with one of Michael’s friends. They came over one night and that’s how we met. We actually didn’t talk that much. I was in a relationship at the time and, after I broke up with my ex, I started talking to Michael. From the first date we went on, we’ve spoken every day since then.

Michael, what drew you to Victoria?

Michael: When I first met her, I really hadn’t been in a serious relationship. I always ask Victoria, ‘Did you ever think that we would end up here?’ It sounds crazy. I was drawn to her because she’s very family-oriented, she loves kids, and she’s a very affectionate person. I’m more reserved and quiet, and her openness drew me to her.

Victoria, what drew you to Michael?

Victoria: Obviously, I thought he was very handsome [Laughs], and then I really got to know him. The relationship I had before him was a high school one… it wasn’t a good one at all. What drew me to Michael the most was what a great guy he was. He was not your typical jerky guy and he’s extremely smart, which I also wasn’t used to. I liked everything about him… how motivated he was. To see where he was, and where he is now is really amazing.

Michael, when did you know she was "the one?"

She [Victoria] has asked me this question. When we first started dating, it was a serious relationship to me. I remember there was one particular night when she was working at night at this clothing store. She would always answer my phone calls and texts, and on this one night, she didn’t because she couldn’t. I really got concerned and worried, and that’s when I realized that I really cared about her a lot. There wasn’t a moment specifically, though. It’s something that over the course of our relationship, and after living with her, I just saw that everything was going so well. And I didn’t want it to change.

Victoria, when did you know that Michael was the one for you?

I think we had told each other we loved one another a month into our relationship. I was on the phone with my mom and I told her, ‘I’m going to marry him. I know it.’ She can vouch for that!

Michael, how did you propose?

Michael: I have family in Spain and every summer that I can, I visit. Victoria and I traveled to Spain to visit my family and, before we went, I went to New York City to look for a ring. Our trip to Spain was short, but absolutely crazy and stressful. And the whole time, I had the ring with me. We were on vacation, but because we were around my family, there wasn’t a right moment. We arrived to New Jersey exhausted after our trip – I still had the ring with me. I proposed to her at home before we were about to go to sleep. I was waiting for the right moment, but I guess it never really came. I didn’t want to make her wait.

Victoria, what went through your head when Michael proposed?

Victoria: When we lived together, we knew where this was headed. Having it happen, though… I don’t think you can really prepare for it. I just started crying right away. He looked at me and said, ‘Umm… you didn’t really say yes yet.’ It was one of the best moments of my life.

Tell us about your wedding plans.

Michael: As far as the actual planning, it’s a little bit difficult because of my field. I’m an accountant studying for the CPA licensing exam, and have one test. One of the things we’ve spoken about, and which I’ve asked of Victoria, is that we don’t really start going into the planning until after the testing is done. She’s been really patient with me. We do have a time frame. We’re planning for a wedding in 2014.

What are you most looking forward to after you’re married?

Victoria: Personally, my life goal is to have a happy and healthy family – that’s what I’m most excited about. Once we’re married, that’s one huge step where I could see myself.

Michael: Myself, I tend to get pretty stressed out about certain things, as far as work and school. I’m looking forward to the point where we are married, have a house, and I am kind of relaxed with her. I’m looking forward to whatever life brings. It’s been over six years since we got together… still, we’re young. I look forward to starting our life together.

And here is the adorable couple back in 2010...
