Couple of the Week: Ana Victoria Cepeda and Jonathan R. Wickers

You really never know when “the one” is right under your nose.
Such is the case for our new Couple of the Week, 26-year-old Ana Victoria Cepeda and 27-year-old Jonathan R. Wickers. The Brooklynites went to the same university and didn’t meet until after Wickers graduated, which was during Cepeda’s last week there.
Cepeda and Wickers’ mutual friend tried to match the dominicana with another guy – but, well, it didn’t work out exactly as planned. Read the couple’s love story below:
How did you two meet?
Jonathan: We both went to SUNY Binghamton for five years, though I graduated a year before Ana did. During that entire time, we had never met or had any friends or classes in common. During Ana's last week there, she went out with some friends and met a friend of mine, who was still in school. When she moved back to the city, her family had just moved to Staten Island and she didn't know anyone. One night, she had plans to go out with her sister and got into an argument with her, and my friend (who was leaving to Israel the following week) called her to see if she wanted to hang out. He was actually trying to hook her up with his friend, Chuck. He drove her all the way to Queens, and it was there that we met. The entire night, I thought Ana was with Chuck; we barely spoke. Towards the end of the night, we spoke and I thought, “Wow, she is pretty cool, and not dating this other guy.” So I called my friend the next day to get her number, but as soon as I mentioned Ana, he told me, “Yeah it was great Chuck got to hang out with her.” So I added her on Facebook instead. It was love at first "poke."
What attracted you to your significant other?
Ana: The night Jonathan and I met, we hardly spoke to one another but he softly made a way to include me in short but memorable moments. His caring personality definitely showed that night and I liked it. I was so glad that he took the initiative to reach out to me the next day via Facebook. What drew me to him were his qualities. He’s hard working, intelligent, and actively engaged in being healthy. He is knowledgeable in many subjects, from psychology to and most importantly God. He is encouraging and loves to teach me new things. Last but not least, I feel safe when I'm with him.
Jonathan: Besides beautiful and smart, she is also a very caring person who is very family-oriented. Similar to me, her best friends are her siblings. We just seemed to click really well. Also, I thought she was really cute on our first date because she was so nervous; she even dropped a tomato at dinner.
When did you realize you were with the right person?
Ana: A year and a half into our relationship, I starting contemplating about it and, as I looked back, I realized that I've learned so many valuable things from him. Jonathan is a person of wisdom and I cherish every time we have one of our deep conversations, particularly about God or life. In many ways, he has shown me how much he truly cares for me. Whenever I go to him for advice, he's always there to help.
Jonathan: She was upset one time, and I told her that I would do my best to ensure that nothing really bad would ever happen to her. I realized I meant it 100 percent.
Tell us about the day of the proposal.
Ana: All I'm going to say is that it was sweet, but not what I imagined or hoped my proposal would be. Even with that, I knew that I wanted to be with him. I would be a fool to let him go.
What went through your head after he asked you?
Ana: Well, first I thought, “Oh my gosh, now?!” And soon after that I thought, "Wow he's really nervous." I didn't know if that was good or bad. Later on, he told me he was very nervous. I couldn't understand why, but I felt bad for him and that was sweet.
Tell us about your wedding plans.
Jonathan: I had no idea so much went into a wedding. To be honest, I did not really think about it until about one month after I asked her.
Ana: It’s been a slow process. I'm a Libra, so I take forever to decide. It took us months to pick a date and find the right venue, but we found a hidden gem in Long Island. With that said, taking it slow for me has been favorable and so far its coming together just fine. I can't wait to see the end product. I trust it’s going to be beautiful. I also need to say thank you to my family, Jonathan and his family for their patience.
What are you most looking forward to after you’re married?
Jonathan: Not having to drive between Brooklyn and Queens multiple times a week, or making Ana take the train for two hours to come see me. Just kidding…I would say a big part of it is spending more time with my favorite person.
Ana: Spending more quality time with him and making a home and family. Also, learning more together and seeing how our love grows.
