Ruben and Emelina of Fort Rucker, AL

The reason why I love her is very simple. She puts up with me. We have been together since we were 15 years old. Out of 16 years together, we have been married 13 of them. She has given me three of the most beautiful children I could ever ask for. Emmy has been with me through hard times and never questioned me why. When I was in Iraq, she ran a household filled with trials and tribulations, taking on the mom and dad role for a 7yr old, 6yr old and a 4yr old! When the pipes broke under the kitchen, she did not panic. She just moved on and took care of the kids and the house. I am currently in Alabama at flight school for the Army. She again has dropped everything to move herself and our family to a strange state full of prejudice and hate for Hispanics to follow me and support me in my career. She had to drop out of school to make this move and has put her life on hold to keep our family as one. Even knowing that after I get out of flight school I am guaranteed a ticket to Iraq once again, she supports me. She does a lot to keep our family together, including working at a hospital and coming home to take care of our kids, let alone taking care of me in my career. I only hope that I can return to her every courtesy and all the love that she has given me in our 16 years together. How many women out there would put up with a husband like me? A man who picks up the family and moves to another state with hardly any notice. A man who spends more time with the books than with his wife and kids. A man who will be on his way to Iraq in the next year and is not sure that he will be returning. Not many women could put up with that. The proof is on the Army post that I live on. We are pretty much the only couple that has not gotten divorced and remarried. About 90% of the families are broken. We are a rare family in the Army setting. She is an angel sent from heaven and I couldn't ask for anyone better. She is my everything, my world!

Mariela Rosario,

I'm a raging opinionista and I love to share my ramblings on everything from pop culture to food to stuff that makes me laugh & cry! I've worked in all types of media (TV, film, print) and was previously the online editor at Latina magazine before joining Mamás Latinas. On most nights you can find me working my way through my library of cookbooks or playing with my puppy Lola (my only child so far). I have a wonderful hubby who shares my passion for any and all kinds of travel. Together, we've formed a semi-professional wine drinking team.
