Inspiring Latina of the Week: Triathlete Aurora Colello

What advice do you have for anyone who wants to run a triathlon?

Just register for a race.  If you don't, you are going to come up with a million reasons to talk yourself out of it, and you will.  There are many levels of triathlon, choose one of the shorter distances (super sprint or sprint) that you feel comfortable with and after you register, begin looking into the sport!

Find a local triathlon club in your area, get a group of girlfriends or family together to do it with you, and train together! There is so much information on the internet that could help you begin the journey. When I signed up for my first race, five years ago, I could not run a mile, swim, or bike longer than a few minutes. It took time to build endurance and figure out the sport on my own, but I did it. So just do it! Choose a race and register!

Coping with an illness on a daily basis is not easy. Do you have any advice, words of wisdom, or encouragement or anyone who’s dealing with illness?

To anyone dealing with an illness I would say, the first step is to conquer your mindset. I remember when I was first diagnosed, I sat in my house and cried for days. I was so depressed, then angry, then scared, then depressed again. I am a positive, energetic, happy woman, this was totally not me, but the diagnosis devastated me. It wasn't until my husband challenged me to fight this disease and ask God what he wanted to show me in all of this that I made a change in my mindset.

I decided that I was going to do something! With God's help, I was going to fight this thing! Once I changed my mindset I was able to begin battling this from a very different place, a much stronger place. I would also say be open to everything and anything, natural, holistic or alternative. I was, and that is why I am where I am today with my health. Even if it sounds strange or a little out of the box, give it a try! You just might find the answers that you are looking for to help you be in a better place with your health.
