Inspiring Latina of the Week: Pinup Photographer Alina Vargas-Afanasieva

What's a typical shoot like?

My team is 100 percent women. There are three of us: the makeup artist, the hairstylist and me. I dress them up and it is just playtime for grown-up women. I think they really enjoy it. It's time for yourself, time being around friends. My makeup artist is very talkative, people enjoy the conversation. I always hear laughter. Sometimes I ask them, do you have an idea of what you'd like to do? Most of them say they do not. Then when they come to the studio I can show them some examples of what they could do and we take it from there.

Do you have a favorite pinup artist?

I love Gil Elvgren. I like Alberto Vargas’ work but for me it's too sexual sometimes. I also really like Celeste Giuliano from Philadelphia. She really does an amazing job representing Elvgren paintings, but as photography.

Do you have movies you draw inspiration from?

I do have a favorite actress: Bette Davis. My God, I love her in All About Eve.
