Inspiring Young Latina: Zolanlly Gutierrez

Our resident intern, Zolanlly Gutierrez is this week's inspiring young Latina for her strong work ethic and dedication to survivors of domestic violence. The Dominican-American writer is a senior at The Pennsylvania State University, majoring in Print Journalism and minoring in Spanish. Get inspired by the Queens native's story below:

What led you to pursue a career in journalism?

"What ultimately led me to study journalism was the thrill of helping preserve my Latin culture. I wanted to be a voice for the Latino community. I believe in the power of words and I hope to be a good representation of a modern day Latina."

What are some challenges you have faced and how have you overcome them?

"While being in college, I have faced many economic challenges. It’s a scary feeling knowing that the semester is about to start and you haven’t figured out how or where to get the tuition money from. But I don’t let that discourage me. Where there’s a will, there’s a way."

What school project are you the most proud of and why?

"Last semester I was part of “The Vagina Monologues” play. For three nights of the performance, I served as a voice for survivors of domestic violence in our community. I was able to bring awareness and raise money for Centre County Women's Resource Center, a local organization that helps women who are victims of domestic abuse."

What gives you the most pride of being Latina?

"I am one of those Latinas who carries her heritage on her sleeves. I love learning, teaching, and observing the cultural evolution that’s happening right in front of my eyes. I take the most pride in knowing that I kept one trait from my ancestors alive - strength."
