Inspiring Latina: Meet Country Star Ashliegh Lisset!

Inspiring Latina: Meet Country Star Ashliegh Lisset!

What would be your advice to fellow Latinas who want to pursue a musical career in this genre?

Go for it! There are going to be obstacles no matter what career path you choose. Stay true to who you are and never give up.

What makes you proud to be Latina?

Being a Latina is who I am, and I'm proud to just be me.

Who are some of your Latina role models?

Selena! She created so many opportunities for women who were trying to enter the genre. I also love Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato — they both grew up in the Dallas area. And Jennifer Lopez!

What's the songwriting process like for you? Where do you find your inspiration?

The process really depends on my mood. Writing is the easy part; turning words into lyrics that make sense is sometimes more challenging. I recently had the opportunity to work with songwriter and producer, Zac Maloy. He really helped me out with the process of writing a good song. He's super talented!

Most of my inspiration comes from personal experiences or what I see my friends going through. I wrote a song titled "Running With Fire." It's about falling for a guy you know will break your heart, but yet you can't resist him: "I know where there's smoke, there is a lesson somewhere and you're never going to play fair. You're a race, a chase, you're a run with fire and when you run with fire, you're going to get burned."

Who are some of your musical inspirations?

Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, George Strait, Cole Swindell, Lee Brice, Brantley Gilbert, Janis Joplin, Selena Gomez, Demi [Lovato], Taylor Swift. I have a long list but those are the artists I listen to most frequently.

Growing up in Texas, I'm sure you were surrounded by Latino culture. Do you have any special traditions you celebrate as a family?

Yes. Dallas, Texas is a very diverse city with a lot of Latin culture! Being Latino — we celebrate everything!

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I hope to see myself in Nashville, living my dream of becoming a national recording and performing artist.  I also hope that my music and story can inspire others to overcome tragedy. I'm so thankful for John Marks at Sirius XM for giving me a chance to be heard on radio and Folds Of Honor for allowing me to become an Ambassador for their organization. I hope in five years, I can be that person who is helping others like they have helped me.
