Inspiring Latina: Meet Fashion Designer Denise Focil!

Inspiring Latina: Meet Fashion Designer Denise Focil!

It's true: you can be a fashion designer when your grow up! Denise Focil is proof.

The Ecuadorian-born, Los Angeles-based designer developed passion for clothing early in life, and decided to pursue her dreams at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in LA. There, she quickly began designing one of her favorite items: the leather jacket.

Her love of leather soon led her to Alpinestars, the world's most advanced and high-quality motorcycle apparel company. She drew upon those tough-girl, motorcycle influences and her world travels when she began designing for her two lines AS by DF and ASTARS. Focil has developed a look all her own: sleek, refined, feminine... with a touch of edge and a dash of leather.

We chatted with Denise Focil about her inspirations, her aspirations, and her Latina heritage. Read it all below:

How do your Latina roots inspire your work and designs?

My Latina roots are a part of everything I do. I would say the key role they play in my clothing is in my attention to fit. My ultimate concern is making every woman that wears my pieces look and feel beautiful in them. I think of flattering all figures. Accentuating virtues and masking our indulgences. Perception is everything.

What Latina celebrity would you love to dress?

I have dressed some of these, and I would love to see them in my pieces again, and some that I am hoping to dress soon: Jessica Alba, Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, Eva Mendes, Alessandra Ambrosio and Salma Hayek.
