Judging from Latinos’ outrage that Mattel’s latest Hispanic doll, Mexico Barbie, is offensive, I may stand alone when I say that being excluded from the Barbie collection, period, would not have been a bad thing.

Barbie has always been a doll that promotes stereotypes and an unrealistic ideal of beauty (not to mention that they are the dullest people at the party. Growing up, I used to borrow my brother’s Ninja Turtles just to liven up my playtime with Ken and Barbie and their insipid pink convertible).

Growing up, my sisters and I called our grandfather Guelo and he referred to us as his little cabronas. It always made me smile. Though we were very close, when he died two years ago, I had to content myself with attending his wake in Detroit. Only a handful of relatives made the journey for his funeral and burial in Cerralvo, a small municipality near the northeastern city of Monterrey, Mexico.

UPDATE, 9:00pm ET, April 19: Boston Police report they have captured the second suspect identified in the Boston Marathon bombings, Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19. The suspect was taken alive from a private residence at 67 Franklin St. in Watertown, MA, where he was believed to be hiding inside a dry docked boat in the backyard.

Texas Fertilizer Plant Explosion Kills 5 to 15 People, Injures 180

A devastating chemical explosion at a fertilizer plant rocked a small town north of Waco, Texas yesterday evening, leaving between 5 and 15 people dead and sending 180 to the hospital for minor to severe injuries. The blast reportedly flattened buildings, lifted concrete blocks, and caused massive flames. The community, of about 2,600 people, has been told to evacuate due to poor air quality from the fumes, according to Yahoo.
