Staff Health Challenge: A Better Burger

One of the things that totally freaked me out about joining this health challenge was a fear that I was going to have to deprive myself of things I really, really love. Like wine, chocolate and my all-time American fave: The Burger.

Whenever I am feeling down and out or just need something to make me feel like a school kid again, I'll indulge in the delicious and tasty treat of a burger and a chocolate shake. But when I checked the calorie content of that meal, I literally almost had two heart attacks in a row.

Then I remembered what Christine Persaud (our nutritionist) said, "It's not about depriving yourself of things you love, it's about making smarter and healthier decisions." Even so, I was really worried that one indulgent meal might knock me off track, but I wanted—no, needed—to have a burger so I did some research and found a way to make a smarter choice. Let me introduce you to the Bison burger! Weighing in at only 2-3 grams of fat and about 150 calories per serving (as compared to 10+ grams of fat and 240 for a beef burger) it's a delicious and lean substitute. 

Overall, it tastes almost exactly the same and it totally satisfied my craving. Now if only they could figure out a way to make a fat free chocolate milk shake, hmm...
