Commentary: Are Your Latina Curves Killing You?

The scariest risk for overweight Latinas may actually be heart disease, the #1 killer of women—a statistic that a staggering only 29% of Hispanic women know, according to The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease. We also face heart disease nearly 10 years earlier than Caucasian women and 60% of us report engaging in no physical exercise program at all—one of the healthy living habits that could decrease our chances of heart disease.

There is also a link between diabetes in Hispanic women and our chances of heart disease, a link which has not yet fully been explored. What we do know, though, is that our rates of diabetes are almost double those of non-Latino whites, according to the American Diabetes Association.

And if you’re overweight and looking to get pregnant? Forget about it! There are many health risks associated with pregnancy while you have many extra pounds and even more reasons why you must lose weight before getting pregnant, including less complications for your baby and yourself during pregnancy and childbirth.
