Commentary: Are Your Latina Curves Killing You?

I went from being a chubby, shy kid to a teen who embraced her curves only to find out that I actually needed to lose weight for my health. After I lost 100 pounds, I realized that losing weight didn’t necessarily have to mean giving up the Latina curves that I’ve come to love.

I won’t lie—it’s still a daily struggle to keep the weight off. Whenever I go home for the holidays and see my papi’s pork from La Caja China, I just can’t help but stuff myself. That’s just one day of the year, though. I don’t keep a perfect diet all of the time but I’ve learned (the hard way) how important it is to be realistic with yourself about your weight.

Sure, I love my Latina curves. But they’re not worth the heart disease, diabetes and all of the other risks that come with being overweight. The truth of the matter is you can be curvy and healthy with a sensible diet rich with vegetables, fruit, whole grains, lean meats, less fried food, less salt, lots of water, no sugary drinks, spices and seasonings instead of butter for flavor and, of course, an exercise program that you can actually stick to. After all, our curves shouldn’t come at the high cost of our lives.
