According to CNN.com, researchers found that about 25% of overweight Hispanic women thought that their weight was actually “normal” while only 15% of non-Latino white women thought the same. What does this mean for us? Well, we love our curves—and may not even realize that we’re putting ourselves through all of the dangerous side effects of being overweight.
One in four of us is actually overweight and not taking any precautions. In fact, I would bet that many more of us don’t even know the risks we’re putting ourselves through by embracing our full-figures and curves. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but I didn’t realize just how far things got until I went to the doctor, at 18 years old, and he told me that I was actually obese.
The statistics are scary when it comes to Latinas. The U.S. Office on Women’s Health reports that about 3 in 4 Mexican-American women are overweight or obese, which increases your risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, breathing problems, arthritis, gallbladder disease, sleep apnea and even some cancers.
