5 Ways to Work Out Without Hitting the Gym

Summer is almost here, which means it’s almost time to break out the bathing suit and shorts. But if the thought of hitting a gym makes you cry a little inside, don’t freak out just yet – we’ve got some better activities to get you moving.

Get Biking

Whether you live by the beach, the mountains or in a big city, biking is a great way to stay active and help the environment at the same time! Why not swap your bike with your car one day a week? With biking you can burn as many as 750 to 1,000 calories in an hour if you’re really working up a sweat. (Plus, you build lots of leg muscle, which is great for all those summer shorts and skirts.)

Hike it Out

Hiking (or, as we like to call it, walking) is a cheap and easy way to stay active. All you need is a pair of shoes and you are good to go! With hiking you can burn anywhere from 440 to 650 calories per hour depending on the hike.

Kayak or Canoe

If you live by a beach or a lake -- or can make the drive to one – kayaking or canoeing is a great way to have fun in the water and build a ton of upper-body muscle! You can burn up to 400 calories an hour and stay cool on those really hot summer days.
