I've been excited for this special since word first got out about it and it didn't disappoint. I think it gave a solid picture of what a diverse people we are and how diverse our experience is. Do I think any new ground was covered? No.

As the granddaughter of famed Puerto Rican nationalist Lolita Lebron (currently in intensive care in a hospital in Hator Rey, PR)—who famously stormed into the house of representatives in the 1950's armed with an automatic pistol—Vilar found it difficult to escape her family's shadow. Her own mother felt the same way and when Vilar was 8-years-old, she committed suicide by throwing herself from a moving vehicle.

A baby’s coos and ga-gas can melt any parent’s heart, but there’s one sound that can fill it with fear: a whooping cough. Also known as pertussis, this condition is highly contagious and it’s estimated that there may be as many as 3.3 million adults and teens with the disease in any given year. Symptoms are often milder in adults—where the condition is usually mistaken for a cold or bronchitis—but more severe in vulnerable babies who are not fully immunized. In recent years, about 90 percent of pertussis deaths have occurred in babies younger than four months.

Oldest Woman to Give Birth Dies

Maria del Carmen Bousada died last week at the age of 69, leaving behind her 2-year-old twin boys. She was the oldest woman on record ever to give birth. Though she was 65 at the time she was impregnated, the Española lied to doctors at the Pacific Fertility Clinic in Los Angeles, telling them she was 55—the age limit for in vitro fertilization—in order to fulfill her dream of motherhood. Bousada, who was a single mom, gave birth to Pau and Christian in December 2006 at the age of 66.
